Welcome to the December 2013 edition of Coaching Matters, the articles I have been reading through the month.

I have disappeared down somewhat of a wormhole lately as I have stumbled across the concepts of complex systems, spontaneous order and self organisation. Fascinating subjects but with a horrible tendency to cause me to reach for the dictionary every 10 seconds.

I first heard mention of these concepts in a lecture by Frans Bosch (notes here) and as I scratch the surface of the subject (18 months later I’ve barely made a mark on it!) I am beginning to realise the wide implications to the world of sport, coaching and beyond. A good starting point for those with no knowledge of these topics is Dave Snowden’s lecture which I have placed in the top ten articles and there are several other resources in the skill acquisition section courtesy of Peter Arnott (@SGGTCoaching) and Graeme McDowall (@GraemeMcDowall) both of whom I am very grateful to.

Outside that there are 80+ articles on a wide range of sporting and coaching topics so I hope you find something of interest.

Don’t forget that if you have written or know of similar content that would be good for future posts then please let me know via simon@undergroundathletics.co.uk or on Twitter @SiNainby.
