Coaching Matters: Around the web October & November 2015

Creative Child

Welcome to the October/November 2015 edition of Coaching Matters, a round up of the articles I have found interesting in the 2 months relating to coaching, sport science, physical preparation and skill acquisition. Its a whopper this month as I have been slugging about a bit – strap in!

I have had a great few months coaching & learning. I have taken on a new sport with the London & South East Netball Academy (a brilliant group of coaches & players that have been fantastic to work with) and while the rugby team I coach have been on the sharp end of the results there have been some hugely valuable lessons.   CPD has been coming thick and fast too with the highlights being Relearn with Mark Upton, Al Smith & Andrew GillotKeir Wenham-Flatt’s seminar on how he approached the Rugby World Cup with Argentina and Martin Bingisser’s Special Strength Training Seminar at Twickenham. Massive thanks to all of them for brilliant sessions & being so generous with their time & thoughts – if you ever get a chance to see any of them speak, grab it with both hands!

Great to meet @Sporticus at #Relearn too – he is a blogging machine & great bloke to boot – follow him and check out his article round up the PE Playbook.

One of the key areas I have found a common theme from all of this is behaviour change.  As a coach I see this as vital. The acid test of any program is the athlete’s behaviour when away from the coach or team environment.  My first foray in to this area was Switch by Chip & Dan Heath. I highly recommend it & asked my Twitter followers for some further reading which I have added under the Behaviour Change Resources section. Dr Gemma Pearce – @GemmaSPearce – and Dr Dick Bailey – @DrDickB – were especially helpful here so give them a follow.

Anyway the whole point of this blog is sharing and interaction so if you have written or know of similar content that would be good for future posts then please let me know via Twitter @SiNainby.

Don’t forget to check out the Coaching Matters Live Round Up Tool, all the previous Coaching Matters blogs, my Notes From blogs of various lectures/CPD I have attended and various random thoughts on coaching.
