Coaching Matters: Around the web March 2015

no-education

Welcome to the March 2015 edition of Coaching Matters, a round up of the articles I have found interesting in the month relating to coaching, sport science, physical preparation and skill acquisition.

This post marks two years since I started the Coaching Matters series and it has grown quite a lot in that time. The first post had 10 articles!

I added a great new tool to the site this month, an RSS feed of many of the blogs I follow which updates on an hourly basis. Bookmark the page (or you can access it from the far right button in the navigation bar above – “Coaching Matters Round Up”) and you can have a daily fix of the latest blogs that have been published – Click here for the RSS Feed Tool.

The hot topic this month is Continuous Professional Development (CPD). The requirement for CPD to be logged in order to maintain a licence or accreditation has led to a thriving industry of providers ranging from the licensing bodies to one man bands and large Corporations selling courses. I put out the following tweet and got a fairly big reaction. Click on the date at the bottom of the tweet and you will see all the replies from other coaches.

Price and quality are the two main issues and I suggested that one solution would be for attendees to pay what they thought the course was worth. Shortly after Darren Roberts put out a message to say that he had adopted this model for his CPD day called Assess, Treat, Manage, Perform. Considering the high quality of presenters he has assembled this stunned me!

I never expected anyone would actually do this as the majority of providers are simply out to make money. Darren marches to the beat of a different drummer though and has jumped in on what he has called “Either a bold social experiment or a very bad idea…”

This model has the potential to make a real difference to CPD provision not only in keeping providers honest in their offerings but also in accessibility for students or those on lower incomes. I have booked on for it so if you are going let me know.

Speaking of honesty I recently came across Brian Mujati’s YouTube channel which gives a real warts and all insight in to the life of a pro rugby player – well worth digging in to.

The whole point of this blog is sharing and interaction so if you have written or know of similar content that would be good for future posts then please let me know via Twitter @SiNainby.

The articles are divided by General Coaching, Skill Acquisition, Physical Preparation & Sport Science. I have also added a Miscellaneous section for some general interest articles that don’t really fit any of the other categories. Don’t forget to check out all the previous Coaching Matters blogs, my Notes From blogs of various lectures/CPD I have attended and various random thoughts on coaching.
