Coaching Matters: Around the web July 2015

Mario Andretti

Welcome to the July 2015 edition of Coaching Matters, a round up of the articles I have found interesting in the month relating to coaching, sport science, physical preparation and skill acquisition.

Pre-season is upon us in the Northern Hemisphere and with the explosion of social media and video there is lots of content being put out by coaches, teams and athletes so lots of great articles and videos this month.

I am coaching a new rugby group and have been working hard to practice what I preach. Not a single marginal gain or fancy gadget to be seen but an emphasis on constraints led sessions where the basics are done well and I try and keep my trap shut! Devising constraints, challenges and puzzles has been as hard for me as it has for them to solve but I am thoroughly enjoying it and can already see the approach bearing fruit.

I am not unrealistic though and one of the biggest lessons I have learnt over the past two years has been that significant change takes a significant amount of time and consistency. In the past I have tried to impact too much, too quickly and ultimately been frustrated. I am taking a long term view with this group and am very lucky to be working with a great team of other coaches and players.

Also this month I’m off to the UKSCA annual conference which is always a good chance to catch up with old faces and meet some new ones. Hopefully there will be some good information shared and I will be able to add to my Notes From series.

The whole point of this blog is sharing and interaction so if you have written or know of similar content that would be good for future posts then please let me know via Twitter @SiNainby.

Don’t forget to check out the Coaching Matters Live Round Up Tool, all the previous Coaching Matters blogs, my Notes From blogs of various lectures/CPD I have attended and various random thoughts on coaching.
