Coaching Matters: around the web February 2015

Welcome to the February 2015 edition of Coaching Matters, a round up of the articles I have found interesting in the month relating to coaching, sport science, physical preparation and skill acquisition.

Saracens Rugby have been putting on some excellent free CPD sessions recently and the most recent with CEO Edward Griffiths and Coach Paul Gustard gave a detailed insight into why they have been so successful since 2008. I put together a Storify of a series of tweets I posted from my notes. Many teams put up catchy slogans and bandy about motivational phrases but they often mean nothing in reality. Saracens are clearly a team that lives their values.

Methods are many, principals are few – methods often change, principals never do

Successful teams all have radically different tactics, strategies and systems but the one constant is a strong culture that they have built from the ground up themselves.  Too many people try and copy and paste whole aspects of programs but as I pointed out in my post on Cargo Cult Coaching this is at best a futile endeavour and at worst doomed to failure. So while it was great insight be careful to look at the messages through the lens of critical evaluation rather than just imitation.

Special mention this month to Nick Hill.  I have been having some great conversations and really enjoying his blog. Nick is a big advocate of Teaching Games for Understanding and has been coaching in Chile facing up to the challenges of a radically different culture and language. His blogs are fantastic examples of reflective practice and I particularly like that he uses a GoPro to film the sessions and provides transcripts. Give him a follow on Twitter (link is his name above) and check out his blogs.

The whole point of this blog is sharing and interaction so if you have written or know of similar content that would be good for future posts then please let me know via Twitter @SiNainby.

The articles are divided by General Coaching, Skill Acquisition, Physical Preparation & Sport Science. I have also added a Miscellaneous section for some general interest articles that don’t really fit any of the other categories. Don’t forget to check out all the previous Coaching Matters blogs, my Notes From blogs of various lectures/CPD I have attended and various random thoughts on coaching.
